International Medal Success

This evening we celebrated and rewarded two of our gymnasts with their recent international medal success.

GMPD gymnast Jonathan Mackie competed for Team GB at the 2011 Special Olympics Summer Games in Athens, Greece and came home with no less than seven medals, six of them GOLD! What an utterly fantastic result for Jonathan. The seventh medal was a silver for Team GB.

Douglas Ross, a Men’s Artistic gymnast went to the Isle of Man with Youth Team Scotland for the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games and brought home a gold medal in the Vault competition. It was the sole gymnastics medal and one of five gold medals for the Scottish Team. Again, a fantastic effort by Douglas.

Without the skill and dedication of their coaches, these medals would be all the more difficult to obtain, so we also rewarded GMPD’s Angela Turner and Men’s Artistics Marius Gherman for their work in turning out such talented gymnasts. Well done all!

2011 Youth Commonwealth Games

Four of the six gymnasts, chosen as part of Youth Team Scotland to compete in the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Games, Isle of Man, 6 - 13 September 2011, are from the City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club. This is an outstanding indication of the talent prevalent in this facility amongst the gymnasts and the quality of coaching that they receive.

The chosen four are Liam Davie, Douglas Ross, Carly Smith and Cara Kennedy. Coach Marius Gherman will also attend as the men’s coach at the games.

Pegasus Open Medals

Marius took five boys down to Maidstone for the 2011 Pegasus Open on Saturday 18th June and all came home with medals. From left to right: Douglas Ross took gold on floor and a bronze on vault whilst Liam Davie took a joint gold on vault and another gold on high bar. Both were in the Junior category. Commonwealth gymnast Ryan McKee won bronze in the Senior all-around event. In the Under 16s Rob Keys, took a bronze on vault as did Kelvin Cham in the Under 14s. A great effort by all in such a prestigious competition.

Men’s Artistic British Championships 2010

6 boys from the Men’s Artistic section travelled to Leicester to compete at the 2010 British Championships which was held at New College on 5th, 6th & 7th November.

Commonwealth gymnast Ryan McKee had a good competition finishing 12th in the Senior all-around and 4th on Vault in the Masters event, Ryan also finished in 8th on Floor & 9th on Parallel Bars. In the Junior & Youth events Liam Davie & Douglas Ross finished in the the top 20 All Around with Liam finishing 8th on High Bar & 9th on Parallel Bars, Douglas finished 6th on Parallel Bars & 7th on Rings. In the intermediate competition, Reece Dall finished in the top 20 all-around & Rob Keys finished 8th on Vault. In the Boys event Kelvin Cham finished in 8th position All Around & joint 7th on High Bar.
